Site Reliability Engineer
About the role
In this role, you will
- Own production health during EMEA hours as part of a follow-the-sun team, and hand over cleanly to the next region.
- Act as a first-line responder for production incidents affecting Expedia Group's travel platforms: triage, troubleshoot, escalate, and drive issues to resolution within defined SLAs.
- Contribute across the full incident lifecycle: detection, response, communication, mitigation, recovery, and follow-up.
- Take part in blameless post-incident reviews using structured methods such as RCA and 5 Whys, and track corrective actions through to completion.
- Build, tune, and maintain actionable, low-noise alerts, dashboards, and monitors, and reduce alert fatigue.
- Use logs, metrics, and traces (Splunk, Datadog, or similar) to investigate issues across distributed systems on AWS.
- Write and maintain runbooks, handover notes, and operational documentation so knowledge is shared across regions.
- Automate repetitive operational work using scripting and, where useful, infrastructure as code.
- Work with software engineers, platform teams, and data/ML partners across Expedia Group to improve the operability of production services, including AI-powered workloads.
- Participate in shift rotations, including weekends, and communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders during incidents.
Minimum Qualifications
- Relevant technical degree or equivalent practical experience.
- Hands-on experience handling production incidents, including on-call or shift-based work and operating under pressure to restore service.
- Working knowledge of the incident lifecycle (severity classification, escalation, communication, post-incident review).
- Experience with root cause analysis techniques such as 5 Whys and writing clear post-incident reports.
- Practical experience with monitoring, logging, and observability tools (Splunk, Datadog, or equivalents such as Grafana, Prometheus, ELK, New Relic, CloudWatch).
- Experience creating, configuring, and tuning alerts and monitors.
- Solid troubleshooting skills across applications, networks, and cloud infrastructure.
- Working experience with AWS as a primary cloud platform.
- Scripting ability (Python, Bash, or similar) to automate operational tasks.
- Clear written English, including structured shift handovers and incident updates.
- Willingness to work shifts covering EMEA hours, including weekends on a rotating basis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct experience with Splunk and/or Datadog (queries, dashboards, monitors, SLOs).
- Experience with infrastructure as code (Terraform, CloudFormation).
- Experience with incident tooling such as PagerDuty, Opsgenie, or ServiceNow.
- Experience defining SLIs/SLOs and driving reliability improvements from incident trends.
- Experience working in a distributed, multi-region operations team, handing over between time zones.
- Exposure to supporting AI/ML-enabled services in production.
- Track record of reducing incident volume, MTTR, or alert noise through automation and process improvement.
