How an ATS reads your resume
The system extracts plain text from your file, then splits it into contact details, work history, education and skills. Tables, text boxes, images and unusual fonts can scramble that text.
Recruiters then search that text with keywords and filters such as job title, location or years of experience. Some systems also rank applicants by how closely they match the posting.
Does an ATS reject resumes automatically?
Usually a person makes the decision. Automatic rejections mostly come from knockout questions in the application form, such as work authorization or required certifications. The bigger risk is not being found because your resume is hard to parse or lacks the posting's wording.
How to make your resume ATS friendly
- Use a single-column layout with standard headings: Experience, Education, Skills.
- Save as a text-based PDF or Word .docx, never a scanned image.
- Mirror the exact terms from the posting that honestly apply to you.
- Show skills inside work bullets, not only in a skills list.
- Put contact details in the body, not in the header or footer.
