Senior Systems Engineer (Mainframe Storage)
About the role
- Engineer and evolve critical IBM Z, z/OS and mainframe storage infrastructure supporting Australia's largest bank.
- Broaden your expertise across hardware, storage, systems engineering, resilience, automation and emerging AI-assisted engineering.
- Solve complex infrastructure challenges while helping shape a secure, resilient and modern mainframe platform.
Do Work That Matters
See yourself in our team
You'll join a technology environment where complex, business-critical systems demand rigorous engineering, collaboration and continuous learning. The role offers the opportunity to deepen your existing expertise while developing capability across adjacent mainframe technologies. In this role, you will:
- Engineer and enhance enterprise IBM Z, z/OS and mainframe storage infrastructure with a focus on availability, resilience, security and performance.
- Support hardware installations, upgrades, capacity changes, storage migrations and technology refreshes.
- Engineer storage infrastructure including DASD, storage subsystems, logical volumes, FICON and SAN connectivity.
- Analyse storage utilisation, I/O performance, channel activity and system capacity to identify and address performance constraints.
- Diagnose complex hardware, storage, operating system and performance issues and drive root-cause analysis and permanent remediation.
- Support storage replication, disaster recovery and infrastructure resilience capabilities and participate in recovery testing.
- Develop automation and tooling that improves provisioning, monitoring, maintenance and operational processes.
- Explore responsible uses of AI-assisted engineering for troubleshooting, automation, documentation, knowledge discovery and analysis.
We’re interested in hearing from people who
Bring solid experience in mainframe infrastructure engineering, systems programming, storage engineering or a closely related discipline. You don't need to be a specialist in every part of the IBM Z ecosystem. Of equal importance is strong engineering judgement, curiosity and the ability to learn unfamiliar technologies and solve problems across traditional technical boundaries. Experience across several of the following will set you up for success:
- IBM Z infrastructure and z/OS, with knowledge of technologies such as JES2, TSO/E, ISPF and JCL.
- Enterprise mainframe storage, including DASD configuration, provisioning, capacity management and performance optimisation.
- IIBM DS8000 and TS7 storage technology, FICON/SAN connectivity or mainframe I/O architecture.
- Storage replication, disaster recovery and resilience technologies such as GDPS, HyperSwap, Metro Mirror or Global Mirror.
- Monitoring, diagnostics and performance analysis using technologies such as RMF, SMF, OMEGAMON or comparable tooling.
- Automation or scripting using REXX, Ansible, Python or related technologies.
- Delivering complex infrastructure changes safely in large-scale, business-critical environments.
- Strong troubleshooting, technical risk assessment, collaboration and knowledge-sharing capability.
Exposure to Parallel Sysplex, Coupling Facilities, System Automation, NetView, CICS, Db2, IMS, IBM MQ, Endevor or broader IBM Z hardware and software is advantageous, but deep expertise across every technology is not expected. The advertising framework specifically recommends focusing on transferable capability and potential, distinguishing essential from desirable experience and avoiding overly long requirement lists, so I've consolidated the original technology catalogue accordingly.
