Principal Enterprise Voice Engineer
About the role
Primary Responsibilities
Enterprise Voice Architecture and Engineering
- Serve as the senior technical authority for enterprise IP voice and video infrastructure.
- Lead the design, engineering, modernization, and technical implementation of Cisco, Avaya, Oracle, and associated voice technologies.
- Establish engineering standards, architecture requirements, configuration baselines, and technical implementation strategies.
- Review and approve complex engineering designs, system configurations, and technical solutions to ensure performance, security, scalability, and resiliency.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and provide modernization, lifecycle management, and capacity planning recommendations.
Enterprise Networking and Voice Integration
- Provide technical leadership for integrating enterprise voice services across routing, switching, WAN, firewall, and security infrastructure.
- Direct engineering solutions involving SIP signaling, media services, call routing, carrier interconnections, and multi-vendor interoperability.
- Lead technical assessments of IPsec, MPLS VPN, BGP, and QoS implementations supporting enterprise voice services.
- Collaborate with network and cybersecurity engineering teams to resolve complex infrastructure dependencies and security requirements.
Advanced Troubleshooting and Operational Support
- Serve as the highest-level technical escalation point for complex voice service incidents and engineering challenges.
- Lead advanced troubleshooting and root-cause analysis involving SIP signaling, call flows, media paths, routing, and network security.
- Direct corrective actions for major incidents, recurring problems, and systemic service reliability issues.
- Provide technical oversight for system maintenance, upgrades, capacity planning, and configuration management activities.
Problem and Change Management
- Provide technical authority for reviewing and approving engineering changes, implementation strategies, and rollback procedures.
- Assess architectural risks, operational impacts, and service dependencies associated with enterprise voice infrastructure changes.
- Lead technical investigations and engineering improvements through established Problem and Change Management processes.
- Coordinate complex implementations and technical resolutions across engineering teams, operations, and customer stakeholders.
Technical Leadership and Documentation
- Provide technical direction and engineering oversight for assigned projects, initiatives, and complex technical workstreams.
- Establish and maintain enterprise voice engineering standards, architecture documentation, SOPs, and technical procedures.
- Review engineering deliverables and mentor less-experienced engineers through design reviews, troubleshooting, and knowledge transfer.
- Advise program leadership and government customers on technical risks, infrastructure improvements, and modernization strategies.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience and 12+ years of prior relevant experience, or Master's degree with 10+ years of experience. Specific experience, education, and training may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Current IAT Level II or higher certification, such as Security+ or CISSP.
- Active DoD Secret clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced experience engineering and supporting Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM), Avaya Aura, Oracle Session Border Controllers (SBCs), and enterprise voice gateway technologies.
- Demonstrated expertise in SIP signaling, call routing, multi-vendor interoperability, and SBC-to-carrier interconnections.
- Strong knowledge of Secure Real-Time Transport Protocol (SRTP), G.711/G.729 codecs, and Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF) signaling.
- Experience designing and engineering distributed firewall infrastructure supporting secure enterprise voice communications.
- Advanced experience designing, implementing, and troubleshooting IPsec, MPLS VPN, and BGP routing infrastructure.
- Experience architecting and optimizing end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS), including traffic classification, marking, queuing, and prioritization for voice and mission-critical applications.
- Experience evaluating network security, routing, and transport architectures to ensure voice service availability, performance, and resiliency.
- Experience leading complex engineering initiatives, technical design reviews, and enterprise voice modernization efforts.
- Experience supporting medium and large scale enterprise voice environments.
- Experience providing technical guidance, engineering oversight, and mentoring to multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Key Success Factors
- The ideal candidate is a senior technical authority capable of leading enterprise voice engineering initiatives across complex, geographically distributed DoD environments.
- The successful engineer will demonstrate advanced expertise in voice architecture, SIP signaling, network integration, and complex troubleshooting while providing technical direction, evaluating engineering risks, and driving improvements in service reliability and resiliency.
- Success requires the ability to make sound technical decisions, resolve challenges beyond the capabilities of less-experienced engineers, and guide enterprise voice modernization without formal supervisory responsibilities.
