How UK internship hiring works
Most UK summer internships and industrial placements open between September and January for the following year, and quantitative finance, investment banking and consulting programmes typically close earliest. Tech, gaming and startup internships run on rolling deadlines, so applying the week a role appears matters more than the calendar.
A placement year (sometimes called a sandwich year) usually lasts 12 months and sits between the second and final year of a degree. Graduate schemes are structured 1–3 year programmes with rotations; direct-entry graduate roles are permanent jobs with no rotation.
