Sr. Mechanical Engineer
Overview
Join a dynamic and innovative R&D team dedicated to developing the next generation of light scattering, field-flow fractionation (FFF), and chromatography-based analytical instruments. As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will lead the design, development, integration, and optimization of precision mechanical and optomechanical systems from concept through production.
Working in a multidisciplinary environment spanning optics, fluidics, electronics, firmware, software, and chemistry, you will be responsible for architecting robust mechanical solutions that enable best-in-class instrument performance, reliability, manufacturability, and serviceability. You will play a key role in advancing new technology platforms while mentoring junior engineers and driving engineering best practices.
Responsibilities
- Develop and create detailed design and mechanical layout of components, subassemblies, and top-level instruments from concept through production
- Develop and review design concepts, drawings, bills of material, and assembly processes
- Conduct detailed engineering analysis and test of components, subassemblies, and instruments to verify design and specification goals
- Perform mechanical, fluid, thermal, and systems analyses to support new and existing designs
- Lead in prototype build and preproduction activities
- Develop, design and implement equipment, tooling, fixturing, and processes to achieve production requirements for safety, delivery and cost
- Provide assignments and technical mentoring to junior level Engineers, Designers, and Technicians
- Properly utilize DFM (Design For Manufacture) methods and GD&T
- Prepare, follow through with, and present design and drawing reviews
- Work closely with NPI (New Product Introduction) to support the smooth transition of design into volume manufacturing
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years industry experience in design and analysis of precision mechanical/electromechanical components/assemblies for production
Skills
- Proficiency designing precision mechanical components and assemblies taking into consideration design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, interchangeability, ease of assembly, and cost
- Proficiency using 3D parametric modeling software (preferably Autodesk Inventor or Solidworks)
- Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, materials, solid and fluid mechanics, and heat transfer
- Strong knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5 2009 as well as industry drafting standards
- Experience with DFM (Design for Manufacture) methodology
- Experience processing ECO's, practicing organized revision control using a Product Data Management tool (PDM)
- Fluency in English - written and spoken
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively within and outside of team, possessing strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with management, peers, suppliers and customers
Preferred
- Optomechanical system design.
- Fluidic system design for chromatography systems (HPLC/UHPLC/LC).
- Sheet metal enclosure design.
- Injection molded plastic design.
- Precision machined components.
- Prototype development and rapid iteration.
- Finite Element Analysis (CFD and experience with ANSYS considered a plus)
- Vendor and supplier management.
