Through Copper South Australia (Copper SA), we are building a leading copper portfolio that supports the global energy transition, supplying materials essential for renewable energy, electric vehicles and digital infrastructure. For you, this is an exciting opportunity to grow your career, make a meaningful impact, and help shape the future of one of Australia's leading copper businesses.

About Prominent Hill

Prominent Hill is a well-established copper-gold operation within BHP's Minerals Australia portfolio, with a strong future and ongoing investment. Located 650km north-west of Adelaide, the site operates across underground and surface mining on an 8/6 FIFO roster. A major shaft project is supporting underground expansion and extending mine life to at least 2040, creating long-term opportunities across the operation. It's a technically complex site where you can build your skills, take on new challenges, and be part of a team where safety and looking out for each other matters.

About the Role

This is a pivotal leadership opportunity to guide one of Australia's most significant underground copper-gold operations through a period of major transformation and growth.

Reporting to the General Manager Prominent Hill, as Mine Manager, you will be accountable for the safe, reliable and cost-effective delivery of underground mining performance at Prominent Hill while leading the operation through the next phase of its evolution. With the Prominent Hill Operations Expansion Project (PHOX) commissioning in 2026 and the transition to a hoisting-led operating model, the site is preparing to increase production capacity to approximately 7.5Mtpa through the Materials Handling System (MHS) hoist.

Working closely with the General Manager, Technical Services and site leadership teams, you will play a key role in supporting operational readiness, ramp-up activities and the successful integration of new infrastructure into the operation. This is an opportunity to influence how the future mine operates, helping establish the systems, capabilities and operating disciplines required to sustain higher production rates while maintaining a strong focus on safety and performance.

Prominent Hill operates within a contractor-led underground mining model. As a result, success in this role will rely on your ability to build trusted partnerships, align diverse teams around common goals and drive performance through influence, collaboration and accountability. You will lead a small BHP team and work alongside a large contractor workforce of more than 800 people, creating a culture where safety, inclusion, operational excellence and continuous improvement thrive.

In this role, you will:

  • Support the General Manager in delivering safe, reliable and cost-effective underground mining performance across the Prominent Hill operation.
  • Provide visible safety leadership and embed strong risk management, field leadership and operational discipline across BHP and contractor teams.
  • Lead and influence a diverse workforce, aligning owner and contractor teams to achieve shared safety, production and business objectives.
  • Strengthen contractor partnerships and drive performance outcomes consistent with BHP's safety, operational and cultural standards.
  • Ensure disciplined execution of mine plans, operating routines and business operating system practices to improve productivity and reliability.
  • Support the integration of the PHOX expansion and associated materials handling infrastructure into the site operating model.
  • Partner with Technical Services, Planning, Processing and functional teams to optimise mine performance and support Copper SA growth objectives.
  • Build leadership capability, workforce engagement and a culture of accountability, inclusion and continuous improvement across the operation.

About You

You are an experienced underground mining leader who combines strong operational expertise with the ability to bring people together to deliver results in complex environments.

You will bring:

  • Proven leadership experience in senior underground mining operations roles such as Mine Manager, Production Manager or Senior Superintendent.
  • Extensive experience delivering safe and reliable production outcomes within large-scale underground mining operations.
  • Strong capability working within contractor-intensive or alliance-style operating environments, with the ability to influence outcomes and build productive partnerships.
  • A sound technical understanding of underground mining methods, mine planning and operational optimisation.
  • Demonstrated success leading large workforces and developing high-performing teams with a strong safety culture.
  • Commercial acumen and an understanding of the key cost, productivity and performance drivers within underground mining operations.
  • Experience using operational and financial performance data to support decision-making and identify improvement opportunities.
  • The ability to lead through change, navigate complexity and create alignment across multiple stakeholder groups.
  • Tertiary qualifications in Mining Engineering, Engineering, Geology or a related technical discipline.

A First Class Mine Manager's Certificate of Competency, or eligibility and willingness to obtain the relevant South Australian statutory qualification, will be highly regarded. Postgraduate qualifications in business, management or a related discipline are advantageous but not essential.
