Media AI Software Intern
Job Description
The Role and Impact: Join Intel's Datacenter Media Software team as a Software Engineering Undergraduate Intern and work where real-time media meets AI. Our team builds software that moves, processes and understands video, audio and voice on Intel Xeon platforms. This includes the open-source Media Transport Library for SMPTE ST 2110 broadcast media over IP, an optimized voice and speech codec SDK, and AI tools and agents that analyze and search video and audio. In this role you will help develop, optimize and deploy these solutions for broadcasters, telecom providers and cloud media services. This is an exceptional opportunity to gain hands-on experience, develop your technical expertise and explore long-term career possibilities in a collaborative, forward-thinking environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the design, development and optimization of media software, from high-performance network transport and speech codecs to AI-based video and audio analysis.
- Build and integrate AI tools and agent workflows for media understanding, such as transcription, object and event detection, and semantic video search.
- Measure and improve performance and efficiency on Intel CPUs, GPUs and Ethernet NICs.
- Strengthen software quality through test automation, conformance and performance testing, fuzzing and CI pipelines.
- Contribute to open-source projects and work with internal product teams and external collaborators.
- Keep learning and apply new skills to advance projects in line with Intel's business objectives.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Telecommunications or a related field.
- Comfortable working in C and Python, and writing Bash scripts. You don't need to know everything, but you should be ready to jump into unfamiliar code and work out how it works.
- Hands-on experience with Linux, including the command line and building and debugging software.
- Understanding of modern software development practices, including code reviews, CI (e.g. GitHub Actions workflows), test automation and AI-assisted programming.
- Basic knowledge of server and networking hardware (servers, network cards, switches, cabling), and willingness to set up and connect equipment in the lab.
- Basic knowledge of AI/machine learning.
- A resourceful, persistent problem solver: you take on topics you don't fully understand yet, look for creative ways around obstacles, ask good questions and keep going until you reach a solution instead of giving up.
- Ability to execute tasks in a disciplined, detail-oriented way.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with C++, or with writing and debugging GitHub Actions workflows.
- Practical experience with lab or homelab setups, such as configuring servers, NICs and switches, or troubleshooting network connections.
- Interest in or exposure to media technologies (video, audio, voice codecs, FFmpeg, GStreamer) or high-performance networking.
- Experience with AI applications such as computer vision, speech recognition or LLM-based agents.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented, dynamic environment.
- Effective communication skills for contributing to projects and exchanging ideas with cross-functional teams.
We invite you to bring your curiosity, drive and talent to Intel, where you will have the opportunity to grow, innovate and make a meaningful impact through your contributions.
