Software Engineer

Location: New York, NY Work Arrangement: Hybrid – 4 days onsite (Monday–Thursday), 1 day remote (Friday) Employment Type: Full-time Salary: $180,000–$230,000 + Competitive Equity Visa Sponsorship: Open to eligible visa transfers, including H-1B transfers and OPT

About the Role

Chariot is looking for a strong Software Engineer to join its engineering team in New York City. You will build and own backend services and infrastructure powering a modern payment platform.

This is a hands-on engineering role with significant ownership. You will work closely with founders, product, and engineering teams to design systems, build APIs and backend services, make architecture decisions, and solve complex scalability and reliability challenges.

What You'll Do

  • Design, build, and operate scalable backend services and APIs.
  • Own backend components and systems end-to-end, from architecture and development through deployment and production operations.
  • Design and develop REST APIs and, where appropriate, gRPC services.
  • Work with distributed systems, databases, messaging, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Make architecture, API, database, and infrastructure decisions.
  • Build reliable, highly available services capable of handling significant transaction volumes.
  • Containerize and deploy production applications using Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Work with cloud infrastructure, particularly AWS.
  • Implement monitoring, alerting, logging, and production observability.
  • Troubleshoot performance, reliability, and scalability issues in production.
  • Collaborate directly with founders, product managers, and engineers to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
  • Participate in system design discussions, technical debates, and whiteboarding sessions.
  • Contribute across the technology stack when needed rather than working within a narrowly defined engineering silo.

Required Qualifications

  • 2–10 years of professional software engineering experience, with strong backend development experience.
  • Proven experience building and owning production backend systems end-to-end.
  • Professional production experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Strong experience developing backend services and REST APIs.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or another relevant technical field.
  • Experience working at a strong technology company, high-growth company, or startup environment.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, APIs, databases, and distributed systems.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, highly collaborative engineering environment.
  • Willingness and ability to work onsite in New York City Monday–Thursday.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Go or Node.js.
  • Experience with AWS.
  • Experience with Terraform / Infrastructure as Code.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL.
  • Experience with gRPC.
  • Experience building fintech, payments, banking, or financial infrastructure.
  • Experience with high-volume transaction processing.
  • Experience with observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, or Datadog.
  • Experience with Kafka, queues, event-driven systems, or other distributed messaging technologies.

Ideal Background

We are particularly interested in engineers who have worked in fintech, payments, high-growth technology companies, or VC-backed startups, and who have demonstrated ownership of production systems at scale.

Experience at companies such as Stripe, Brex, Chime, Plaid, Marqeta, Adyen, Modern Treasury, Coinbase, Datadog, Cloudflare, Databricks, Capital One, Discover, or similar organizations is a plus.

Work Authorization

Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States. The company is open to eligible visa transfers, including H-1B transfers and OPT.

Compensation

$180,000–$230,000 base salary + competitive equity

The final compensation package will depend on experience, skills, and overall qualifications.

Important Location Requirement

This is not a fully remote position. Candidates must be able to work from the company's New York City office four days per week, Monday through Thursday.
