Do Work That Matters
As Senior Manager Engineering Practice
See yourself in our team
This is a strategic engineering leadership role with broad influence across the organisation. You'll bring together performance insights, engineering capability and leadership judgement to help raise standards, while providing the vision and product leadership for technology that supports engineering progression. You will:
- Lead the strategy for strengthening a high-performance engineering culture, setting clearer expectations for engineering performance and leadership.
- Define meaningful performance signals by bringing together engineering personas, other engineering insights to inform better leadership decisions.
- Shape what great engineering leadership looks like and identify opportunities to strengthen the effectiveness and influence of engineering leaders.
- Connect performance and capability insights with engineering career development and progression, helping identify talented engineers who may be ready for their next opportunity.
- Lead the vision, product direction and ongoing evolution of the Engineering Promotion application and its supporting technology, working with engineering delivery capability rather than operating primarily as an individual contributor.
- Partner closely with engineering leaders, skilling teams and other stakeholders to strengthen technical capability and engineering mindset across the organisation.
The Practice's broader approach is centred on hiring for future capability, clarifying engineering skills, enabling transparent career progression and raising engineering standards.
We’re interested in hearing from people who
You'll bring credible engineering experience alongside the strategic thinking and influence needed to operate across a large, complex technology organisation. You'll be comfortable moving between engineering, people and performance discussions, translating data and insight into clear priorities and action. Ideally, you'll bring:
- A strong engineering background, with experience leading engineering teams and/or meaningful hands-on technical experience.
- Demonstrated experience shaping engineering performance, capability, talent or leadership practices at scale.
- Strong strategic thinking and the ability to translate a vision into practical priorities, standards and measurable outcomes.
- Confidence working with engineering data and productivity signals, applying sound judgement rather than relying on individual measures in isolation.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing capability, particularly with senior engineering and technology leaders.
- An understanding of engineering career pathways, progression and technical capability development.
- Product and technology leadership capability, with sufficient technical depth to guide the evolution of engineering-focused applications and tools.
- A continuous-improvement mindset, balanced with thoughtful risk and cost management.
This capability-led approach also aligns with CommBank's current job-ad guidance, which recommends focusing on transferable capability, avoiding unnecessarily long requirement lists and distinguishing essential capability from desirable experience.
